RANGREZ - My contemporary abstraction finds its voice in thread

Rooted in India and shaped over three decades across the United States and the United Kingdom, my work carries the imprint of three distinct continents. Each home has left its permanent mark on my artistic identity:

• The atmospheric skies and evergreen quiet of the Pacific Northwest.
• The structural density and intersecting architectural lines of London.
• The vibrant color, rich craft, and cultural pulse of Mumbai.

For years, my creative voice emerged through contemporary abstract acrylic paintings—rapid, fluid expressions shaped by Western sensibilities. Those canvases captured emotional seasons of global stillness, isolated fantasy, and the resilience of navigating life across borders.

But during extended residencies in Mumbai, a long-held familiarity reawakened. Surrounded by master artisans whose skills span generations, I realized that the bold gestures and emotive lines that once lived in acrylic paint could be entirely transformed. What began as swift, instinctive marks on canvas has found a slow, deliberate, and textured new life in hand-embroidery.

 In this collection, thread replaces pigment, and silk replaces canvas. Traditional techniques, deeply rooted in heritage, are reimagined to become the modern instruments of contemporary abstraction.

• Cut Daana & Seed Beads: Tiny tubular beads and round glass elements that lift the flat surface into three-dimensional fine art.

An Exclusive Hallmark: What makes this collection truly unique is the innovative blending of two distinct stitches, creating hybrid textures entirely exclusive to this body of work.

 The title Rangrez captures the ultimate essence of this transformation. Historically, a rangrez is an artisan and an alchemist of hues - the one who dyes fabric and alters plain cloth into something vibrant and alive.

In my contemporary practice, this definition expands: I am not dyeing cloth, but infusing silk with abstraction, allowing thread to become color and stitches to become movement.

Through this medium, I collaborate intimately with local artisans whose hands carry centuries of generational knowledge. Together, we create a body of art that is collective yet personal, independent yet harmonious. 

A BEAUTIFUL EVOLUTION - Rangrez is not simply an echo of past paintings; it is their evolution. It is a story of what happens when you stand at the edge of what you know and choose to begin again.

It is a poetic homecoming that repeats itself—a living dialogue between my worlds, homes, and artistic lineages.
